As we shall see in chapter six, there is some affinity between this liberal narrative and the Marxist story. The liberal story begins with human autonomy, which goes well beyond a mere attachment to personal freedom. Autonomy means to be self-directed, to govern oneself in accordance with a law one has chosen for oneself. Each of the ideologies attaches
